History

At George Eliot, the aim of our history curriculum is to inspire children to be curious about the past and to develop an understanding of what it means to be a historian. Children grow their knowledge of historical concepts and chronology throughout their time in school. Learning is enquiry based and children are encouraged to make connections and discover links between events, individuals, situations and changes over time. Children are encouraged to develop transferable skills they can use across the curriculum and in later life, such as asking questions, thinking critically and evaluating evidence. By presenting children with opportunities to compare similarities and differences, analyse various sources of information, and providing them with a sense of ownership, we hope to incite a life-long curiosity and fascination of the world.

Some examples of enquiry questions that lead learning have been:

-          Could the Great Fire of London have been prevented? (KS1)

-          How and why do changes happen? (KS1)

-          How were the Mayans ahead of their time? (KS2)

-          How has crime and punishment changed through the ages? (KS2)
